Hey guys!
I just came back from watching the new movie called San Andreas, featuring Dwayne Johnson and Alexandra Daddario. I thought I would review it here for you guys. :)
MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD
I think I should just sum up the movie and then get more into it, so here it goes: The movie is about this huge earthquake that hit the whole of California because of tectonic plates and geography shit that I can't be bothered to talk about outside of school. This geographer (is that a thing?) called Lawrence had made a new discovery about how to tell when an earthquake is about to hit, but was too late to get a message across. Meanwhile, Ray is a very successful fireman who recently got divorced with his ex-wife Emma which is about to move in with her new boyfriend, Daniel. Ray and Emma had two girls together Mallory (which recently died drowning, which is something they are all trying to cope with) and Blake, a super open and friendly young lady. The movie is about this wholes town (but in specific this family's) experience with this terrifying earthquake that ruined everything.
Characters:
The whole family situation I found super typical, I had sworn that I had heard the same story fifty times. Ray is exactly how a strong father should be, and of course he blames the death of Mallory on himself. All the characters where exactly how you would expect them to be, so not much to say about this. The characters could be greatly improved.
Graphics and Quality:
This part was absolutely insane. Everything was exploding with so much detail and the quality was insane. The camera angels where amazing and nothing looked at all artificial. They had a lot of underwater shots that where extremely impressive, and also a lot of smoke filled shots that didn't bother me. I feel like a lot of movies the camera angeles change every five seconds, but this wasn't the case for this movie, so i applaud them for the graphics and quality.
Plot(ish):
I though a lot of what was going on very predictable. I was sitting next to my friend and I would just guess what was going to happen and usually got it right. For example, the whole movie Ray was just saving everyone including Emma and Blake, and even though they had set backs, everything ended up perfectly in their favor. In the end when Blake was almost dying, it was so obvious she wouldn't. Also, a pattern started to repeat which I find dangerous in an action movie, because it could turn the movie very boring. Every time everything was going smoothly, there would be either a tsunami or and earthquake, and this happened every time. So the plot was very repetitive and predictable.
Coherence:
This part had some serious issues. In the beginning, Blake gets her legs trapped under a cart seat with a huge part of ciment holding it in place. When she finally got rescued, she started running immediately after. Also to do with people being hurt, Ben also hurt his leg very severely (there had been a huge piece of glass inside, which was removed by Blake, which is also pretty weird), he was struggling in the beginning but after like 20 min he grabbed Ollie on his back and ran up stairs. Also in the beginning, Emma was in the middle of a falling building and when she fell, got smashed by what looked like five different stories of ciment, then all of a sudden got up and started kicking some serious ass, with just a few scratches. She also proceeded to climb a lot of the ciment with more ciment falling behind her, IN HEELS. Like seriously, we can barely walk in heels. I also find it weird that none of characters ate during the whole movie, just saying. Oh and what the heck all of these characters can like breathe under water or something.
Huge Coincidences:
This happens in every movie but honestly, people need to talk about it more. Oh how convenient that Blake decides to sit next to an extremely attractive british architect with a brother that happens to like her too. Oh how convenient that when Ray and Emma jump of a plane they land exactly inside a huge baseball stadium where they could land safely. Oh how convenient that every other skyscraper in California falls except the one Lawrence is in. Oh how convenient that after literally been hit my a tsunami twice, the flashlight once in Blake's pocket is still there.
Overall:
I did enjoy this movie and would recommend it, but could be greatly improved.
xx,
Leticia
